Measurement of the differences in trabecular bone mechanical strength

چکیده
The X-ray microtomography (XMT) pioneered by Elliot and Dover in 1982 [1] was developed and used in many studies [2] until now. While XMT is becoming a common technique in the laboratory studies, a standard for quantitative determination of the absolute material density distribution has not been attained. To date, a quantitative method of bone measurement on the microstructural level is not commonly available and relevant standards have not been defined or agreed. Therefore there is a need to progress this concept in the development and validation of quantitative measurement of the bone density. According to the known literature the results from the measurement of the bone mineral density performed by Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT) correlate with the mechanical strength [3]. Therefore the correlation between results of XMT measurement and mechanical properties should be achieved to prove the usefulness of the method. As a preparation to the accurate validation of the XMT standard proper selection of the region of interest has to be achieved. This paper describes the measurement results of the trabecular bone mechanical strength and stiffness in the different regions of the femoral head. The main goal of the work was to establish a method of selection, dissection and preparation of the trabecular bone specimens with associated protocol including XMT scanning and mechanical tests.

Differences in Trabecular Bone Mechanical Strength Measured by the X-ray Microcomputed Tomography and Compressive Test
The article describes the concept of measurement of the mechanical strength of trabecular bone dissected from human femoral head. When the studies are performed based on the human trabecular bone, there is a risk that correlation can be not achieved due to high discrepancy in the distribution of the bone density and mechanical properties. The compressive tests and X-ray microcomputed tomography...
متن کاملMandibular Trabecular Bone Analysis Using Local Binary Pattern for Osteoporosis Diagnosis
Background: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and increased fracture risk. Since Panoramic image is a feasible and relatively routine imaging technique in dentistry; it could provide an opportunistic chance for screening osteoporosis. In this regard, numerous...
متن کاملEvaluation on mechanical properties of a single trabecular in bovine femur
The increase of patients with osteoporosis is a social problem. Osteoporosis decreases bone strength and increases the risk of fracture. The finding of prevention and treatment methods is an urgent issue. Since cancellous bone is metabolically more active than cortical bone, cancellous bone is used for diagnosis of osteoporosis. There are a lot of studies about stress analysis of cancellous bon...
متن کاملGender specific LRP5 influences on trabecular bone structure and strength.
A mutation in LRP5 (low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5) has been shown to increase bone mass and density in humans and animals. Transgenic mice expressing the LRP5 mutation (G171V) demonstrate an increase in bone mass as compared to non-transgenic (NTG) littermates. This study evaluated LRP5 gene and gender-related influences on the structural and biomechanical strength properti...
متن کاملMechanical Contributions of the Cortical and Trabecular Compartments Contribute to Differences in Age-Related Changes in Vertebral Body Strength in Men and Women Assessed by QCT-Based Finite Element Analysis
The biomechanical mechanisms underlying sex-specific differences in age-related vertebral fracture rates are ill defined. To gain insight into this issue, we used finite element analysis of clinical computed tomography (CT) scans of the vertebral bodies of L3 and T10 of young and old men and women to assess age- and sex-related differences in the strength of the whole vertebra, the trabecular c...
